Temperate House, Kew

The Temperate House Project – Kew Gardens:

The Temperate House originally opened in 1863 and is the largest surviving Victorian glasshouse in the world.  Temperate House covers over 4,880 square metres and has over 15,000 panes of glass – whilst standing at 19 metres high.

Major refurbishment started in 2013 to bring this Grade I listed building back to its former glory and works were completed in 2018.

Access Solution:

Temperate House required extremely careful planning and design works – as due to the nature of the building, there were no means of tying the scaffold to the structure, making our scaffold one of the largest independent structures in London at the time.

At peak, Alandale installed over 180km of scaffolding to the project, in conjunction with the erection of internal and external access scaffolding and environmental protection for the unique trees and plants surrounding the building.

Specification:

Alandale provided / installed a fully boarded external access scaffold with shrink-wrapped sheeting along with a Temporary (all-season) roof.
Internal stepped access birdcage scaffolds were erected, with stair towers and hoists were also provided for the glass panel removal and replacement works.
An ‘Envirowrap’ system was also utilised for safeguarding the surrounding gardens to the project.
